Your First Trail Race: The Complete Gear Checklist
February 2, 2026 · GoWild Team
Signing up for your first trail race is exciting — and a little intimidating. The good news: you need far less than the gear ads suggest. Here’s the honest checklist.
The essentials
- Trail shoes. The single most important item. More aggressive lugs than road shoes for grip on dirt, mud and rock.
- A handheld or vest with water. Even on shorter races, aid stations can be far apart. A soft flask or small vest is plenty for most beginners.
- Anti-chafe balm. Trails mean more movement, more sweat, more friction. Apply before you start.
- A hat or visor and sunscreen. You’ll be exposed for longer than you think.
Worth having
- Trail gaiters if the course is sandy or rocky — they keep grit out of your shoes.
- A lightweight wind/rain shell for mountain races where weather turns fast. Many alpine races actually require one.
- Electrolyte tabs or gels for anything over about 90 minutes.
You can skip (for now)
- Carbon-plated super shoes (built for roads, not roots).
- A GPS watch with every metric imaginable — your phone is fine to start.
- Poles, unless you’re tackling a steep mountain race with big climbs.
