How to Choose Your First Ultra Distance
March 12, 2026 · GoWild Team
An ultramarathon is anything longer than a road marathon (42.2 km). That covers a huge range — from a manageable 50K to a life-altering 100-miler. Here’s how to choose your entry point.
Start with the 50K
For most road marathoners, the 50K (about 31 miles) is the natural first ultra. It’s only ~8 km longer than a marathon, but on trails with climbing it feels meaningfully harder — which is exactly the point. Browse 50K and shorter ultras to find one with modest elevation.
When to jump to 50 miles
Consider 50 miles if you’ve already finished a 50K comfortably, you enjoy being on your feet for 8–12 hours, and you can commit to back-to-back long training weekends. Look for a course with generous cutoffs for your first attempt.
The 100K and 100-mile question
These are huge commitments — nutrition, sleep deprivation, crew and pacing all become factors. Don’t rush here. Most runners are better served by nailing a few 50-milers first.
Match the terrain to your experience
A flat, runnable 50K is a very different animal from a technical alpine ultra with 4,000 m of climb. For your first, bias toward:
- Lower total elevation gain
- Well-marked, non-technical trail
- Strong aid station support
- A date that gives you a full training block
Build backward from the date
Pick the race first, then count back 16–20 weeks for a training plan. Set up a race alert and we’ll tell you when suitable first ultras open near you.
